The rows on Eastgate Street are like nothing I've seen anywhere else - those two-level covered walkways with shops are so unique. The whole city feels really well-preserved and easy to explore on foot. Great place for a weekend city break.
Roman walls and great food - what more do you need?
Walking the full circuit of the Roman walls is genuinely worth doing. You get brilliant views over the city the whole way round. The food scene is solid too - found a lovely spot near the cathedral for lunch. Chester is smaller than I expected but absolutely packed with things to see.
Loved every bit of Chester
The black-and-white timber buildings everywhere give the city such a distinctive look. Chester Cathedral is stunning inside - really worth stepping in even if you're not religious. The city centre is so walkable and never felt overwhelmingly crowded. Really enjoyable few days.
A classic English city done really well
Chester has this really well-kept old town feel that you don't always get in UK cities. The Rows are genuinely unlike anything else in England. Loads of independent shops and cafes mixed in with the bigger names. Felt very relaxed and easy to enjoy at your own pace.
Chester at Christmas is something special
The Christmas market along Eastgate Street was so festive and the decorations across the whole city centre looked great. Plenty of mulled wine and warming food stalls to keep you going. The medieval streets just look incredible lit up at night. Really cosy and fun.
Didn't want to leave!
Chester Zoo was a brilliant day out - one of the best zoos I've visited anywhere in Europe, huge and really well done. The city itself is beautiful too with loads of history around every corner. Friendly locals and good pubs made the evenings easy to enjoy as well.
